Jerry Springer as Bulfinch, or Mythology Modernized was the result of an insight she found irresistible. Not only does the past repeat itself , but here was a chance to compare modern philosophy, cosmogony, history, social ethics, sociology, and psychology with a study of Greek civilization, the basis of western civilization and our literature. In her first book, Starving For the Marvelous, Jean is practicing her grasp and her reach, or what's a heaven for? She chose this title because she believes we are a world of people desperate for happiness and hope, for heroes and marvels. She takes on some very big subjects, not only love, loss, and hope but also who are we, God, angels, death, why did something happen, how was that accomplished? What about cloning? Using DNA? And then there was Möbius. Möbius, the Poetry Magazine was started in 1982 by half a dozen or so Michigan artists and writers in the small town of Lake Orion. After a couple of tries by the Lake Orion Art Center failed, the original group gave up the idea. About six months later, the three wise women who founded and ran the Art Center, Jo Linsalata, Helen Cunniff, and Joan Brace, asked Jean if she would like to try to "revive" their little magazine. She would. Bill, an accountant, had little or no experience with poetry then, and didn't even know if his wife was a good writer at all. But when this chance came, he encouraged her to take it. She celebrated her 18th, and final, consecutive year editing Möbius in 2006 - the magazine having been in print continually for twenty-five years, a rare and remarkable achievement for a poetry magazine. As editor, Jean published poetry not only from all fifty states, but also from all seven continents. Möbius, the Poetry Magazine is now published by a New York group. Jean left Detroit, Michigan, and returned to her native Delaware after losing her beloved husband Bill to ALS. She was able to continue her performance poetry career begun in Michigan in 1989 as well as speak at some notable poetry occasions, including the Delaware Art Museum's program "Art After Hours," drawing their biggest crowd to date. She led off the Poetry Month celebrations in April at the Delaware Grand Opera House (reading with the students of the Cab Calloway School of the Arts and the panelist) in April of 2002. She has been asked to read her poem Gabriel, Descending from several church lecterns at Christmas. The American Association of University Women (she is a lifetime member) called. She helped lead Delaware Young Authors Workshops. She also began speaking for the Delaware Humanities Forum. A new form – lectures. Or speeches. A favorite is "Everybody Knows Somebody Who Writes Poetry." Another is "Gods, Heaven, and Poetry." She has also made many appearances in Delaware and nearby Pennsylvania when the event advanced the cause of poetry, sometimes for nothing but the fun of it. Jean never worried about what her career would be – she knew she'd be a teacher. She started her teaching career in Seaford, Delaware, in 1969, teaching 9th and 11th grade English literature. She taught a great deal in classrooms and in corporate settings while in Michigan. Back in Delaware, she taught for several years at Delaware Technical and Community College and now tutors at Educational Services Tutoring of Wilmington. A member of the Diamond State Branch of the National League of American Pen Women, Jean is currently editor of its magazine, The Pen Woman.
